Audience

The person or group of people the content is directed towards.

Near the beginning of the semester, we discussed the differences between different audiences and how the writing differs with different audiences. Two audiences we identified in class were members of the general public and members of the scientific community, and we discussed how they have different needs from a piece of scientific writing, one example of the different needs is language, members of the scientific community have the scientific knowledge needed to dissect a peer-reviewed scientific journal article and attain key information, whereas most members of the general public have not been exposed to these articles and do not have the knowledge needed to analyze these pieces of data.

After writing each major assignment we were required to write a reflection paper in which we analyzed our audience and our paper to see if our writing met the expectations and needs of its audience

Writing for the Sciences was the first English class where I actually had to identify and analyze my audience and write my paper with those audiences in mind.
