Genre

The form of writing.

The main genres composed throughout the semester were scientific narrative, informative reviews, blogs, fact sheets, and flyers. Different genres have different audience expectations and therefore need to be composed differently to meet the genre conventions.

Scientific Narrative: The scientific narrative was written as a plain story that someone without any scientific knowledge could follow. The narratives contained a plot, characters, and setting, that made it easier for the audience to relate.

Informative Review: The informative review was composed mainly of facts gleaned from peer-reviewed scientific journals which have a high barrier of entry for the general public. This genre should be unbiased; i.e. no stance! The purpose is to inform the audience, not tell them your opinion or try to persuade them to believe something.

Fact sheets: 1-2 pages of facts that are easily read. The facts speak for themselves/ no stance.
